Mexico has legalized cannabis for medicinal use, according to a decree issue by Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexico’s President.
According to Pena Nieto, “… the solutions implemented by the international community have been frankly insufficient” in regards to the control of drugs. He then went on to say that “We must move beyond prohibition to effective prevention.”
Mexico’s lower house in parliament passed the bill in April nearly unanimously, 347-7, showing incredible favoritism. Even Mexico’s Secretary of Health was celebrating the decision, accepting its legalization with open arms.
This isn’t just big news for Mexico however, this is big news for the world. Mexico taking a step in the legalization direction is a giant first step towards global legality. If Mexico is able to fully, and successfully, implement policies that work, not only to make money but lessen crime, the rest of the world will surely follow suit.
Perhaps we will see the end of marijuana prohibition in our lifetimes after all.
